FRIDAY June 26, 2015:
The U.S. Senate, OMHA, and ABNs/HINNs:
What do all those things have in common?
Find out on this week’s show
when we discuss all that with Dr. Ron Hirsch
A few weeks ago, there was considerable chatter on the rac-relief Google Group about how to handle ABN and HINN forms, but at the time there was so much in the news about other topics that we just couldn’t put up a discussion about them. Well, this week, we planned ahead (I know, it’s not like me…) and scheduled a show on the subject, with help from Dr. Ron Hirsch of Accretive PAS. The best laid plans, right?…

The voice vote was unanimous, followed by quite a loud murmur, no doubt the result of so many relieved staffers.
Meanwhile, news keeps popping up. Like the Senate Finance Committee passing 12 – count ’em, twelve – new health policy bills by a voice vote (but not including the AFIRM Act, we’re not sure if that’s good news or not), and the Office of Medicare Hearings and Appeals (OMHA) holding their latest “Appellant Forum.” As my friend Day Egusquiza is fond of saying, “… at least we are never bored!”
At the time of this writing, we await the beginning of the latest Live OMHA public forum. That they call this a “forum” is a complete misnomer. The term forum implies a dialog. Unlike previous “Appellant Forums,” this one is a webinar and/or conference call, where no one is allowed to speak except those on the agenda. Questions are pre-approved, and the answers will therefore also be pre-approved, and no doubt scripted. I’m sure this is an attempt to avoid the embarrassing questions and comments that providers and reporters have voiced in past forums.
FYI, we will *try* to record the webinar live and post a recording to our site, in case you miss it and really want to hear Chief ALJ Nancy Griswold, et al take three hours to explain again how all those pesky appellants are making life so hard at OMHA.
So, we’re going to report on those topics this week, as well. Here’s what we’ll cover:
- The Twelve Bills – short reviews, but at least a couple are interesting. Sort of;
- The OMHA Lecture to Naughty Providers Appellants Forum – a one-sided forum;
- Proper Use of ABNs and HINNs – the ins and outs.
