The Rebirth of CDI
If we feed it right, it’ll come out beautiful, right?

THIS WEEK, we’re again have Glenn Krauss with us to posit a basis for the Rebirth of Clinical Documentation Improvement or CDI. We think (ok, maybe just I think) that CDI has yet to fulfill its promise of improving clinical documentation, instead only improving the capture of revenue boosting language and overlooked diagnoses. Glenn suggests that CDI needs to move into a new “phase,” per se.
Just so I say it aloud here… this show will NOT be about bashing CDI Specialists. We are certain that these specially educated professionals are, like virtually everyone else in a hospital, totally committed to doing the best job they can do every day for their patients and their employer and their fellow staff members.
I mean – who gets up in the morning and says to themselves, “I think I’ll do a lousy job today.” Said nobody ever. And we think CDI Specialists do a great job, we just think they’ve been given a focus that simply cannot improve documentation, without a change in direction.
With that in mind, then, the question for this week is:
CAN we move CDI into a NEW phase, where the goal is improving documentation and what it communicates, instead of just boosting billing and revenue?
SO… THIS week, Glenn and our Panel will be discussing:
- WHAT is truly the present state of CDI – especially CDI training?
- WHY can’t we just move to a “New and Improved” CDI plan?
- WHAT would then Next Phase of CDI need to look like?
- WHAT would a New “Tool Kit” look like for CDI?
- COULD it really change documentation behavior & HOW?
So join us, share your own insights and bring your questions for us!
