Challenges Facing Case Managers & Physician Advisors in 2015
Discussion with Dr. Nick Ulmer & Angie Roberson, Spartanburg RMC
Recently, I had a few conversations with Dr. Nick Ulmer, whom I know from visiting several conferences where we were both speakers on the topic of trying to improve clinical documentation. Dr. Ulmer, along with Angie Roberson, has been working on processes to improve this at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center for years, and they have achieved a pretty fair amount of success, since they began working together. Their successes have prompted their hospital system to produce an unusual conference, now in its fourth year: the Southeast Physician Advisor Symposium, or s.e.p.a.s. I asked them discuss not only what the conference is about, but what they see as the top challenges facing the world of physician advisors and case managers, for the coming year. They graciously consented to spend an hour with me to go over the four main challenges they are focusing on for 2015, and how s.e.p.a.s. is helping them and other hospitals deal with this ever-changing landscape. Below is a recording of our conversation.
In the recording, you’ll learn about the four challenges they will focus on for 2015, and how they intend to face them, partly through the s.e.p.a.s. conference:
- Constant change and the need for both leadership AND engagement,
- Regulations & Operations – the roles of Case Management & Physician Advisors,
- Managing Patient Flow, LOS, and optimizing both care and reimbursement for care,
- The growing need for community coordination & population management.
